Amergan was a Druid in life, who haunted Stonehenge after his death. When Colin MacLeod woke up in the middle of Stonehenge, Amergan took it upon himself to explain to the new Immortal what he now was and what that meant. But Colin would not listen, so Amergan haunted Colin instead, acting as his advisor and conscience. It is unknown how Amergan knew of Immortals and the Game, but the bigger mystery is why he chose to help Colin.
